The Kashmiris were introduced to the art of making durable, beautiful products by the Persian Mystic Mir Syed Ali Hamdani. This art slowly become ancestral. It became so popular in Kashmir that the art which started from Persia and Central Asia became the art of Kashmir. The name, ‘paper-mache’ means ‘chewed paper’. The name is appropriate for the art as pulp is made of wet paper, then adhesives are added to make the pulp sticky. From this sticky pulp, products are constructed. There are two procedures which are followed to make paper-mache products: Sakhtsazi and Naqashi. Sakhtsazi involves making the base of the product, and the latter involves painting and beautifying the end result. There are special naqashi colors which are organic, mineral and vegetable base. Majorly flower and leaf motifs are painted by using various patterns and designs.
