A wooden Elephant with inlay of metal.Tarkashi is inlaying of metal like copper, brass or silver wire in wood. Tarkashi is the art of Uttar Pradesh. It originated in the city of Mainpuri in Uttar Pradesh and now spreads to the districts of Saharanpur, Ghaziabad and Bijnor. Firstly the design is engraved on wood and then on the design the wire is hammered. The design is either geometric or floral. The wood used is a hard one like sheesham, so that it doesn’t break while hammering metal into it.
